Furry Writers' Guild Forum

Recommended works published in 2014

Planning ahead. Here’s a thread to recommend works published in 2014 that you think FWG members should consider for the awards.

Authors, editors, publishers - feel free to mention your publications from 2014 so we know what’s eligible.

For reference, our length criteria:

Less than 10K = short story
10K - 50K = novella
More than 50K = novel

Anthologies can be of any length.

Anthology

“Tour of Duty” by Huskyteer
“The Rising of the Moon Over the Atlantic” by NightEyes DaySpring

“Odd Man Out” by Whyte Yote
“The Joys of Parenting” by Roland Jovaik
“Promises” by Yannarra Cheena

“Dates” by Tony Greyfox
“Binding the Heart” by Rechan
“Complete” by H. A. Kirsch
“Lessons” by Ianus J. Wolf
“Scent of Heaven” by Tarl “Voice” Hoch

Since it WILL be coming out this year (I should have an exact date by the start of next week):

Tales from the Guild, Volume I: Music to your Ears
An Anthology

Deep Down among the Dagger Dancers - MH Payne
Melody of a Street Corner - Sean Rivercritic
Sugar Pill - Mars
Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out - Huskyteer
Shreddy and the Silver Egg - Mary E. Lowd
Night of a Thousand Songs - Jess E. Owen
Echoes from the Consort Box - Mark Neeley
Nocturne - Nathanael Gass

Since Rechan mentioned my other stories, I’ll take my others on here:

“The Hardest Dance” - Tarl “Voice” Hoch published in Fang 5

And of course, Fang 5. :stuck_out_tongue:

I will mention my anthology “Five Fortunes”, published by FurPlanet in January 2014. The five novellas are published here for the first time:

“Chosen People”, by Phil Geusz. 29,000 words.
“Huntress”, by Renee Carter Hall. 40,000 words.
“Going Concerns”, by Watts Martin. 31,200 words.
“When a Cat Loves a Dog”, by Mary E. Lowd. 37,000 words.
“Piece of Mind”, by Bernard Doove. 31,000 words.

My other anthology, “Anthropomorphic Aliens”, published by FurPlanet in July, is all reprints from 1950 to 2013.

My first short story, “Family Life”, is published this year in “Allasso” vol. 3, but it is only 1,350 words so I don’t expect it to be winning any awards.

We have an unusual wordcount in one of our Heat stories this year, so they get split up in the following way:

Eligible for Short Story:
“The Case of the Gelatinous Gemstone” by Tempe O’Kun
“Lines” by Huskyteer
“Jewels of Remorse” by Slip-Wolf
“Lip Service” by Whyte Yote
“Da Capo al Fine” by Dark End

Eligible for Novella
“Fundamental Natures” by Kyell Gold

Gonna throw in my talking-wolf story, free to read online:

The Wolf’s Holiday

Also, since it’s been mentioned but not linked:

Allasso Volume 3: Storge

Family Life by Fred Patten
A Real Stand-Up Guy by Daniel and Mary E. Lowd
Patchwork Selkie by Sarina Dorie
Cold Scent by Alice Dryden
Fancy by Courtney McDermott
Two Women Sit Down on a Beach by Lenowill
First Flight by Lauren Rivers
The Merchant’s Daughter by Carmen Welsh
Only Love Survives by Tristan Black Wolf
On the Surface by James L. Steele

(I haven’t included the poems as there isn’t a poetry category.)

Pulp!

“The Ruins” by Tym Greene
“Prey” by Ocean Tigrox
“Rocket Canyon” by Bill “Hafoc” Rogers
“The Bouncer and the Didgeridoo of Awakening” by T.S. McNally
“Tesla Mae and the Lost Tribe” by Renee Carter Hall

“Speciation” by Fever Low
“Tech Flesh” by Laura “Munchkin” Lewis
“Neural Enrichment” by Direlda
“Skin Deep” by Garret “Hunter” Biggerstaff
“Rich Kid” by Tarl “Voice” Hoch
“Cat’s Cradle” by Ocean Tigrox
“Fast Food Fight” by Ryan Hickey
“Top Priority” by Kyell Gold
“The Shield” by Shelly and David Alan
“Pluto’s Prison” by Friday

Seconded. Admittedly I still have to read more of it, but I’m really proud of “Tech Flesh”, and “Speciation” nearly made me late for work XD Did not want to put it down. I only have a couple of pages left in that particular story and I can’t wait to get back to it.

We have been doing a good job of recommending our own works, but let’s not forget those by authors who are not active on the FWG forum.

Here are some 2014 furry novels that I have enjoyed.

Off the Beaten Path, by Rukis. http://furplanet.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid=725

I know it’s not out just yet, but it will be out next month. I thought I’d go ahead and toss it up here.

Abandoned Places, Anthology.

Specific short stories:

“Empathy” by Rechan
“Belief” by Bill Rodgers.
“Stared Too Deeply” by Tyler David Coltraine
“The World Within” by Johne Lynne
“Sleepwalking” by Adam “Nicodemus” Riggs
“All that Glitters” by Ianus J. Wolf
“One Shot of Happy” by Roland Jovaik
“Whose to Say” by David Ramirez
“Prospero” by Patrick “Bahumat” Rochefort
“Darwin’s Future - An Alternate History” by Taylor Stark
“Rainfall” by Kandrel
“Piping” by Tarl “Voice” Hoch
“World’s Biggest Dragons” by Ryan Campbell
“Scratch” by Been Goodridge
“The Cable” by James L. Steele
“Under the Mountain” by Tonin

Here’s the rundown of my eligible anthro-themed stuff for the year…

Short Stories

“The Emerald Mage” in Hero’s Best Friend: An Anthology of Animal Companions
“How Mother Rabbit Lost Her Name” in Lakeside Circus
“Tesla Mae and the Lost Tribe” in PULP! Two-Pawed Tales of Adventure
“The Mistress of Tidwell Manor” in Stories in Future Tense: The 2015 Word Branch Publishing Science Fiction Anthology
“The First Winter” in Wishing Season: Holiday Tales of Whimsy and Wonder
“Santa’s Summer Vacation,” also in Wishing Season (kind of tangentially furry, but there are talking dolphins and a shapeshifting king)

Novellas

“Huntress” in Five Fortunes
“Signal” in STRAEON #1: Malady Fare

(“Huntress” is just a smidge over 40K, so I noticed it appears on the Ursa rec list as a novel, but for the Cóyotls it’d still be a novella.)

Yep, Abandoned Places is eligible!

I think everyone else has mentioned my eligible work already, so this is to collect it in one place:

Short stories:

“The Cable” in Abandoned Places
“On the Surface” in Allasso 3

Novels:

“Huvek” through Furplanet/Bad Dog Books

Relatively slow year for publishing credits, but those three stories were a long time coming into the light and I am proud of them.

Well, “Prospero” got published in Abandoned Places. That’s about it for the commercially released stuff this year.

May as well list my extensive (ahem) list of eligible works.

Impossible Magic - novel - released by Jaffa Books.

/fin

My eligible works for nomination include:

  • Prey - short story- published in Pulp!
  • Cat’s Cradle - short story - published in Furtual Horizons

And Fangs and Fonts for the non-existent award of best furry writing podcast

I sincerely hope that I will be forgiven for shameless self-promotion. I won my third NaNoWriMo this past year, posting the 68,000-word story chapter-by-chapter as a gift to my followers on SoFurry. I’m told that such self-published works are eligible to be nominated, and I would welcome more readers. “Hat Trick” is available on the site at https://www.sofurry.com/browse/folder/stories?by=170137&folder=40696. If you don’t have an account, you may not be able to see chapters that are rated as “Adult.” If you wish, please download the PDF file from my DropBox at https://www.dropbox.com/s/t99jv2k029ob29a/Hat%20Trick%20%28NaNo%20Draft%29.pdf?dl=0.

Similarly, my short story “White Nights” (https://www.sofurry.com/view/734415, which took third place in the 2014 Summer Adventures contest (out of a field of 150), is available to view on SoFurry. It’s rated “All Ages,” so should be visible without requiring an account. My story “Solstice” (https://www.sofurry.com/view/739389) took first place in that contest, but it is considerably graphic and violent (trigger warnings).

One final short story of which I’m quite proud, “The Ambassador,” weighs in at about 8200 words (https://www.sofurry.com/view/772950) and is rated “All Ages.”

Thank you for indulging an old writer’s vanity. I hope you find my work entertaining.

Tristan Black Wolf

I don’t think anyone has mentioned Ursula Vernon’s short story “Jackalope Wives” yet… So, here’s a link:
