Calls for submissions

An interesting anthology call for pieces involving intersectional feminism – “Problem Daughters”: http://press.futurefire.net/p/problem-daughters.html

Fossil Lake V: WERE-WHAT?!? will be open for submissions in July, if you want to get a head start. They are looking for not-so-traditional transformation stories and poems, so the weirder the species/situation, the better! https://fossillake.wordpress.com/guidelines/

[font=arial]Greetings! One of the hats I wear is that of small press publisher. In 2006 I started Paper Golem LLC.

I’m seeking submissions for the next volume of Alembical, an ongoing anthology series that features novella-length speculative fiction.

Past contributors include Campbell award-winner Jay Lake, Hugo award-winner David D. Levine, Nebula award-nominees Ray Vukcevich, J. Kathleen Cheney (nominated for her novella in Alembical 2), and James Van Pelt.

Submissions should adhere to the following three requirements:

[ul][li]20,000 to 40,000 words in length[/li]
[li]emailed to submissions@papergolem.com[/li]
[li]subject line must be: SUBMISSION: ALEMBICAL[/li][/ul]

Please make use of “standard formatting” which we define as:

[ul][li]8.5″ x 11″ page size (we’re a US-based press)[/li]
[li]1-inch margins on all sides[/li]
[li]left-justification (ragged right margin)[/li]
[li]12-point Courier typeface, double-spaced[/li]
[li]use underlines to indicate italics[/li]
[li]a right-justified header on all but the first page[/li]
[li]that header looks like this: Last Name / Title Word / #[/li]
[li]author’s name and contact info on the first page[/li]
[li]author’s byline and story title centered below that[/li][/ul]

I’ll warn you in advance that our team is extremely picky, but our editors’ goal is always to help you to better tell your story.

At present, we have two of the three novellas we need to publish our next volume, so this is the time to send us something!

Thanks,

Lawrence

Got a dragon story that’s ripe for a reprint?

We have formed a new Publishign Company for Furry liturature. We are currently working on editing our first 10 novels and Fist Comic for publishing. We are looking forward to giving more anthro/furry writers and opportunity to get published.

Congratulations on the new venture. I wish you luck with it and it is always good to see a new house devoted to furry literature. If I might make a gentle suggestion, charging a submission fee of any kind, nominal or not, is usually considered a giant red flag. I can’t speak for everyone, but in my process, a reading fee is an automatic “never submit to this market.”

Reading and responding to electronic submissions in truth has no overhead cost, and even if it’s somehow complicated enough to do so, the vast majority of legitimate publishing forgoes any reading fee, and a great many author sites warn against subbing to a house that charges for the right to do so.

As you note at the bottom of your page devoting a house to such a niche is “likely a lost cause.” First, I hope you don’t really feel that way, but it is a very tough game, and I’d hate to see you further limit your chances of success by opening with a submission charge that drives authors away instead of toward your new house.

Best of luck with your venture,
Mammabear

Agreed with what FrancesP says above on the submission fee. I would honestly also be careful about saying things like “As we are trying to cater to the furry fandom, we realize that this is likely a lost cause.” That reminds me of someone submitting their story and saying something like “here’s my story, I know it sucks” – you’re kind of putting your own potential audience down. I mean, I’m sure you do believe in the possibility of success yourselves, or you wouldn’t be doing this, but if you can’t say without qualification that yes, there is literature in the furry fandom, then that doesn’t inspire a great deal of confidence in a furry writer to want to entrust you with publishing and promoting their work.

Based on the number of typos in this post, I’m extremely dubious about this venture.

In addition to the typos and the red flag of the submission fee, a quick look at the site suggests that their real business is in printing (as opposed to publishing). I’m not sure if it’s a good thing or not that they come right out and use the phrase “vanity press.”

I’ve heard that this is a tough market to break into, but given the theme, I thought I’d post this call here:

CRICKET magazine seeks to publish the highest quality fiction, poetry, and literary nonfiction to engage our audience of enthusiastic young readers. Editors consider unsolicited submissions from writers of every level of experience. Since its founding in 1973, CRICKET has published some of the most respected writers of children’s literature. It is also a wonderful opportunity for promising new writers to showcase their best work.

CRICKET does not distribute theme lists for upcoming issues. However, we have particular interests in stories that explore themes of identity (gender, race and ethnicity, neighborhoods, beliefs and traditions); citizenship and global cultures; scientific and technological exploration; and the creative spirit.

Call for Submissions: Animals Behaving Badly

Deadline: July 31, 2017

CRICKET (ages 9 to 14) is looking for contemporary or historical fiction, retellings of folktales and legends, and nonfiction on the theme of problematic encounters between humans and animals. We welcome humorous stories about troublesome pets, dramatic dealings with wild animals, domestic adventures with backyard pests, warm-hearted friendships with skittish horses—even tales of imaginary animals that exist only in fantasy and legend. Whether you are inspired by stampeding buffalo, beasts from the deep, raccoons in the attic, or foxy tricksters, CRICKET wants to see your best story for middle-grade readers (preferably of 1500 to1800 words).

Circlet Press has a call for ‘Golden Age erotica’ - those who wrote for Pulp! might be interested in this one

(They’re a sci-fi/fantasy house, so plenty of opportunity to include furries.)

Many, MANY years ago, in about second or third grade, I won Honorable Mention in a CRICKET writing contest. They didn’t publish my piece, but did mention me in an issue, and I got a certificate. My parents might still have it, somewhere.

Here is an interesting looking Werewolf/shapeshifter anthology I came across on Horror Tree.

http://horrortree.com/taking-submissions-transformed/

Transformed

Deadline: August 31st, 2017
Payment: $10 and a contributor’s copy
Release the monster within.
Nothing is quite so deliciously freeing as caving to your instincts. For centuries, shapeshifters have personified our impulse to bow to our animalistic nature. From lycans to skin-walkers and everything in between, shapeshifters give us a chance to connect with our inner-selves and celebrate our intriguing differences, our passions, and ultimately our humanity through their necessity of striking a balance between their human selves and supernatural selves.
We are seeking romantic and heated stories that delve into the different challenges all shifters face while navigating the mysterious paths of love and forbidden attraction.
Transformed will be an exploration of our dark side through characters that challenge the human experience by simply being different. We would love to follow the tale of a misunderstood lycan just trying to find his true place beside the woman he loves. We want to experience the angst of a pair of shapeshifting lovers who must fight against their curse to shift into predator and prey every lunar cycle. We would love for you to explore the endless undercurrents of romance, intrigue, and passion that bubble under the surface of not only human and shapeshifter relationships but also those of star-crossed shapeshifting partners. Give us your misunderstood werewolves and gentle fawn-folk. Build us a world where anything goes and the term “humanity” is a loose distinction. We would love for you to write with passion and energy, but please keep violence to a respectful and tasteful level. All heat levels accepted, but strong emphasis on plot is a must if you wish to succeed.
The details:
Stories between 1,000 – 15,000 words long (query for longer)
Reprints accepted but not preferred. When submitting a reprint include information about its original publication in your submission email.
Open to all gender pairings and multiple partners
Simultaneous & multiple submissions = No
Payment: $10 USD and a paperback copy of the anthology in exchange for the non-exclusive right to include the story in both the print and electronic versions of the anthology.
Open Submission Period: June 1st, 2017—August 31st 2017. (Submission email address will be provided closer to the opening of the submission period)
To submit: Please submit a .doc or .rtf in something approximating standard manuscript format to charlie.watson.editing@gmail.com
About the Editor: Charlie Watson is a freelance editor ready to make her mark on the Edmonton writing community. Through her work with various writing and editing groups around YEG who deal exclusively with first time authors, Charlie is devoted to ensuring that fledgling authors have a wonderful experience publishing for the first time.
About the Series: Triskaidekaphilia is the love of the number thirteen. It’s also the name of our anthology series which explores the more shadowy corners of romance and erotica. There will be 13 volumes in total, each of which will be released on a Friday the 13th.

Just found one more. The Insignia Series has a call open for Asian stories with a theme of birds and beasts. Seems tailor made to some furry stuff: https://insigniastories.com/subs/

I think this was mentioned in Slack but not here: The Dragon’s Roost Press is looking for short stories of up to 6,000 words for an anthology about cryptids, hidden/disputed legendary animals like the Loch Ness Monster. Guidelines here: http://horrortree.com/taking-submissions-hidden-animals-a-collection-of-cryptids/ Deadline is August 31. I wanted to be a cryptozoologist as a kid, so I’m looking forward to this one.

“Well…it’s your cow” anthology.

This isn’t a furry anthology perse, but furry stories are welcome. It is an informal submission call, sponsored by Frog Jones.

The call is here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/616863835178595/

Here are the details for those who don’t use facebook:
This isn’t so much a theme anthology. Write whatever you want to write. Stay PG-13. But, the first 2 lines of your story should be as follows:
“So, do we think this is a good idea?”
“Well…it’s your cow.”

Feel free to add dialogue tags to those lines as appropriate. Yes, some of you are way past writing to prompts. We’re going to talk to Nathan Reed and see if we can get one of his great cartoons, this time involving a distressed cow with big ol’ bug eyes. We feel like this will sell.

Since Esther and I are funding this ourselves, we aren’t going to be tracking royalties. We will be paying up front, but the rate will be $.01/word. We know that’s not pro rate, and if you won’t write to that amount we understand. Reprints are probably unlikely, but fine if it works with that prompt. Also, we will have no problem with you publishing the story elsewhere; we will not be asking for exclusive rights, only the right to print the story in this particular anthology and profit therefrom.

Looking for up to 5,000 words; if more than that they’d better be really good words. Capping out at around 80,000 for the anthology.

Submissions should be sent to frog@jonestales.com with COW SUBMISSION in the subject line.

I will expect to start reading submissions in September, and would set a hard deadline on stories for the end of September.

Just a reminder: the third edition of the “Civilized Beasts” poetry anthology for charity is still taking submissions through next month. All poetry on the theme of animals will be considered.

Please send your submissions to civbeastspoetry@gmail.com

Submission guidelines: http://asdfjkl.net/CivBeastsPoetry.com/submission-guidelines/

The deadline is November 1st. All proceeds go to the Wildlife Conservation Society.

Wolfsinger Publications has a call out for Cat stories. http://www.wolfsingerpubs.com/CatTailsGuidelines.html

Keep in mind this is a charity anthology and so non-paying. Still, they specifically say the stories can be from the cat’s pov, so definitely anthro/furry friendly.
