The new Poet Laureate Consultant to the Library of Congress is Juan Felipe Herrera and he has the distinction of being the first Latino Poet Laureate in U.S. history. You may read the story as it appeared earlier today on the PBS Newshour http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/fields-library-congress-juan-felipe-herrera-took-winding-path-poetry/
I would also like to note that another poet whose mother tongue was Spanish and who gained national honor was Richard Blanco. He presented the opening poem for the inauguration of President Barack Obama’s second term in office in January 2013.
