Assuming you’re talking about Furry! (published originally by Sofawolf as Best in Show) – I had heard some time ago that after the publisher bought the rights from Sofawolf, the publisher went bankrupt, and that’s why it’s out of print? Something along those lines, anyway. I’m guessing there must have been no clear path for the rights to revert back to Sofawolf.
I’ve heard several versions of that basic story, yes.
This seems to be roughly true. iBooks, the publisher of “Furry”, declared bankruptcy less than two weeks after it was published in 2006, and neither Sofawolf Press nor I have ever been able to get an answer out of them or the bankruptcy court; aside from being assured that, yes, the rights are all tied up. “Furry” is still in print after eight years, though. I have fun every few months checking it out on the Internet and seeing what its price is in rands and rupees in South African and Indian bookstores.
FurPlanet never answers questions about how well my anthologies for them are selling (four so far, with “The Furry Future” coming out next month), but it continues to request two anthologies a year, for Further Confusion in January and Anthrocon in July. So they must be selling well.
It looks like Bricktower Press, the company that acquired Byron Preiss’s assets including ibooks, is actually still around, and still lists Furry! as in print. I don’t see any indication they’ve actually put out any new titles – their web site sure looks pretty 2006 – but I’d presume their listed publisher is the guy to get in touch with re: rights.
Looks like there could be a heap of GA anthologies next year, if this thread is anything to go by!
Depending on the success of the sportsball anthology, I know I’d be keen at seeing more published.
A bit of poking produced some interesting results for “Furry!: The Best Anthropomorphic Fiction Ever!” (assuming that’s the one being spoken of?): 1 2 3 etc, for anyone interested in owning a copy :3
This is not an accurate representation of events, I’ll discuss with Teiran and e-mail you this week.
Interesting to note. Thanks for replying, FuzzWolf.
