Scribbles an' Squeaks

Hello.

I’m not that great at introductions, being somewhat of a shy, introverted type, and often too serious by far, but I’ll do my best!

I’m Field, a harvest mouse. (Golden fur, prehensile, ropy tail, and all manner of cuteness.) Been writing on my own for a good twenty years, now. Ten of those in the ‘furry’ realm. Never been published or anything, but still! I find I average a story a month these days. I try to stay regularly active at it, even though it’s more in the category of hobby/interest than anything loftier, and it can get eclipsed by work and everyday distractions.

I post most of my writing at So Furry (where I’ve been a member for a decade, now, back to when it had a different title) under the username ‘Squirrel’ - http://squirrel.sofurry.com

Most of the stories I write are romantic, admittedly. I’m inspired a lot by screwball romances (which date back to the 1930’s, with ‘It Happened One Night,’ 'The Awful Truth, ‘Bringing Up Baby,’ and into the 40’s with ‘His Girl Friday’ and such). That is to say, romances that involve a lot of back-and-forth, witty banter, with the female often being the dominant personality, and where the conversation between characters is an act of foreplay. These stories also have a French New Wave feel, where you sorta pop in, observe, and pull out. Almost voyeuristic slices of life.

I’ve also tried my paw at some serialized sci-fi stories, which are a bit heavier, plot-wise. Really enjoy the universe-building that allows.

So, I definitely have things I like to write, and themes/genres I write more often, but I like to think I’m versatile. Or can be.

My work tends to be dialogue-heavy, as stated. I feel I struggle with the more descriptive aspects. My style is quite odd, perhaps off-putting, as I sometimes switch between third and first person and back again with no warning. Use a lot of broken, fragmented sentences. So, I guess my writing is an acquired taste, but …

Ultimately, I guess I’ve joined this forum here to broaden my perspective, writing-wise, and become a little more engaged in the wider furry writing community. Or at least keep aware of it. I sometimes worry I isolate myself from other writers/artists. I don’t know how active I’ll be in the long run, but I want to see if I can stem that tide a little bit.

waves Hiya there!

You’ve definitely come to the write place if you’re looking to improve your skills as a writer, become published, and meet up with some rather interesting characters, both text-based and corporeal.

Welcome to the forums!

Hello and welcome to the forums! I’m glad you were able to find your way here.

I admit, I’ve always enjoyed the witty romances from the 1930s and 1940s. Are you by chance a fan of Fred Astair, Ginger Rogers, or Frank Sinatra at all? They made so many great classics! Anne Richards is even quoted to have said, “After all, Ginger Rogers did everything that Fred Astaire did. She just did it backwards and in high heels.” X3

Either way, I’ll be looking forward to reading some of your stories! Feel free to drop a line or three in the Shout Box. We love meeting new furs!

I wondered if that was the same Field I remembered from FA. Welcome to the forums!

Thank you!

I’ve seen some of the Rogers/Astaire films, yeah. They just don’t make romantic comedies like they used to! I guess the demand isn’t there anymore. The last great romantic comedy, in my mind, is ‘Annie Hall,’ and that was in 1977. But it basically redefined the genre. Everything after has been a variation. Even ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ is basically ‘Annie Hall’ with sci-fi. But, regardless, I do love passionate, romantic stories, filmed or otherwise. So, that tends to be reflected in my writing.

Thanks! I’m the same fur, yes. Same Field. I tend not to post much to FA, though. It’s a bit cliquey over there, I feel, and writers get swallowed up in favor of visual artists. And I can’t draw! So … I mainly stick to So Furry. I’m still an active fur! I guess, sometimes, I’m just quiet as a mouse about it.

Yes, yes, a million times yes! Did you ever get into the early Streisand films? “On a Clear Day You Can See Forever” isn’t one of her better known ones, and is definitely dated, but oh man it still gives me goosebumps! Totally agree that it’s so hard to find a good, solid romance that doesn’t follow the sam tired formula anymore. Love Actually has a completely different feel, but the warmth is still there at least.

Greetings and welcome.

Hey Field. Welcome to the forums.

Hi! I will certainly check you out on SoFurry - I love those comedy romances, too. Recently saw ‘Ball of Fire’, which was a new one on me and I loved. I’d also name ‘Casablanca’ as the perfect romantic comedy, since it’s both romantic and funny, which most alleged romcoms manage to avoid

I’ve seen Funny Girl and Hello, Dolly, and … there’s a Bogdonavich film she’s in, too. What’s up, Doc, maybe.

Thank you, both!

Casablanca’s more bittersweet, to me. But it does have some funny moments. One of the best studio pictures of the era. So much of it seems tropey, now, but that’s only because the movie was so influential.

Greets!

Oooo both Funny Girl and Dolly are pretty awesome <3

sighs I feel like such a movie-holic failure. I’ve never seen Casablanca, or at least never from start to finish >.<

Happy to have you.

Aaaaaaaaahhhh. <3 <3 <3

You’re one of the very, VERY few reasons I even go back to SoFurry anymore. Welcome!

Thank you!

Very flattering … hope I can live up to that!
