Furry Writers' Guild Forum

Salutations!

Probably a lot of you know me already from FA or the previous FWG forums (yes, they did really exist, despite a lot of technical issues!), but since I’m not arrogant enough to think everybody knows who I am… waves Yo there.

Few quick bio things:

Aware of the fandom since about 2000 or so, though I was mostly on the fringes until I joined FA in 2007. Created the Thursday Prompts there (now run by Duroc). My first short story sale was about 15 or so years ago, and since then I’ve published fiction in various places in the fandom and outside it – the most notable publication credits to date being my furry novel By Sword and Star and the short story “The Bear with the Quantum Heart” in Strange Horizons. Plenty of stuff in my FA gallery to explore if you’re not familiar with what I write (I’m on Weasyl, too, as Poetigress), or if you just want a quick intro, I have a free short story mini-collection called Six Impossible Things available as an ebook from Amazon (free on US site only) and Smashwords.

My day job is medical transcription, which means that I spend way too much time every day at my computer (and usually write my fiction first drafts in longhand, in part because I get sick of staring at a computer screen). Married 16 years and counting, and having just turned 36 I’m probably now old enough to be considered a greymuzzle by a startling portion of the fandom. Other interests include children’s/YA literature, animation, tea, journals/blank books, naturism, and cats of all sizes.

…And I hate writing intro posts because I always feel like I’m trying too hard. So I guess that’s enough for now. Anyway, hi.

Oh hey, you have a job with way too much free time too? I work at a college bookstore as a manager so if it isn’t right around the first week of school I’m generally editing or writing.

Welcome and I hope you’ll continue to be a big help to the guild as you have been in the past!

Wow, a published author, how cool!

Unfortunately there’s no downtime at my job unless I choose to take little micro-breaks through the day (which I do, of course, for physical and mental reasons). Most MTs, like me, work from home and also work on production, so instead of being paid hourly we’re paid a certain number of cents per line, which sucks because your paycheck can vary depending on what kind of jobs showed up in your queue that pay period and how many lines you were able to do. And even though I work from home I still have to keep a set schedule. But it hones the proofreading skills for sure, and there’s no beating the commute.

blushes Yep. More comfortable with short stories and flash fiction, still learning how to write novel-length stuff, but getting better bit by bit.

Oh yes, I have heard about that sort of job. I’ve seen postings for it all the time but never applied because they wanted someone with a more medical background. Oh well; worked out in the end for me.
Making your own schedule can be tough. I print out a schedule weekly and I have to really force myself to stick to it. Working from home is nice, but there are tons of distractions. From my experience, anyway.

Hello again!

I need to upload an avatar!

The trick is to 'accidentally' hit the return key more frequently.
