Poetry Collection: Putting Out Feelers

We’re a vocal minority, though. :stuck_out_tongue:

I second Civilized Beasts, or titles indicating thereof. It actually says something about the collection and what it’s doing.

I mean, puns are fine, but it may put off people buying the collection, as poetry is seen as quite classy, a pun my wrongly infer to people that the poetry is not good. Also, are we still going for more mainstream audiences, as that may be a factor too.

Perhaps:

When Animals Speak

Speaking Back

Tales From Beyond

The one that keeps popping into my head is “Jung’s Bestiary.” I feel confident I can come up with something better, though. >.<

Stripes, Spots and Stanzas
Cat-cadence
For Rhyme and Reason
Metered Prints

(yes I can make terrible suggestions too!)

I also like ‘Civilised Beasts’.

‘Paws for Poetry’ is cute, but suggests a cosier collection than this is likely to be. Old ladies seeking rhymes about cats might be misled and shocked!

(Disclaimer: there are undoubtedly plenty of old ladies who appreciate non-cosy poetry, e.g. my mum.)

Some of these are meh, but listing them all anyway in case they spark something for someone else:

Talking Animals (“talking” being both a gerund and an adjective, depending on how you interpret it)
The Mind’s Menagerie
A Menagerie of Verse
Wild Horizons
Anima
In Their Image
The Muses’ Menagerie
A Menagerie of Muses

Some of these would obviously need a subtitle like “Animal Poems” or “Poems of the Animal World” or something like that to help them along.

I wanted to suggest “Other Nations,” based on this quote I’ve always loved, but it looks like there’s a book on animals in modern literature with that title already.

There’s a lot of good ones here, but I’m really digging Civilized Beasts. It stands out and it’s very bold. You can also have a bit of fun with it when you’re advertising for submissions, as well as when it comes out. Can make some very creative taglines and descriptions with it; having it stand out like that will probably get more poets and readers interested in it.

In Their Image actually gave me goosebumps, and I admit to grinning when I read Metered Paws and Jung’s Bestiary. It looks like the general concensus so far is Civilized Beasts, but I want to hold out a little longer and see if anything else might sit well with people.

I like Menagerie – The Mind’s Menagerie ,A Menagerie of Verse , Anima is good too

Civilised Beast is good but I don’t think will be very appealing outside the fandom.

STANZAPOMORPHICS?

I’m starting to wish we could take some of these titles and put a pole at some mainstream site to see which would be most appealing.

Honestly though, the number one goal with this collection isn’t just to sell a collection that would appeal to mainstream audiences. It’s to sell a collection that the fandom and possibly mainstream could both enjoy. It would also be good to keep in mind that there’s been a spark of curosity in the past year from those outside of the fandom of what furries are all about. There are those who might pick up this collection BECAUSE it’s furry-based.

Wide variety of variables to consider.

I do like Anima, because it has a refined feel though still suggests Animals, though I can’t say how well it would work for marketing. Menagerie of Verse has an elegance to it as well, and could be fun to advertise, though I don’t know how many people would recognize what the definition of Menagerie is. So far Civilized Beasts is getting the most momentum.

Anyone else care to throw in their two cents’ worth, either with new suggestions or already existing ones?

Talking Animals Gone Rhyme?

Also chiming in-- “Civilized Beasts” is wonderful imo.

Hey folks, so I added a poll that will be up for two weeks on what we should title our poetry collection. You can give reasons for preferring a particular title over others or keep your choice secret- it’s all up to you.

Just a reminder that the poll is ending this Friday! If you haven’t voted yet, be sure to get on it!

Alright folks! Get your poet hats warmed up, because we’re looking to open up submissions within the next couple of weeks! Woo-hoo!

And the results are in! It looks like with eight votes, Civilized Beasts takes it!

Thank you to all who voted  Hoping to open up submissions after July 4th.

Til then, have a great weekend everyone! I’ll see you Monday.

Excellent news!

Would any of you be opposed to a single email we would all have access to? This way we can access, edit, and reply whenever we have the time/energy without having to bug a singular person to forward the poems over.

Heads up to all volunteers: If you didn’t get the information for civ.beasts@gmail.com please note me, dm me on twitter, or send me an email at m.thekin@gmail.com

Thank you.
