Noir Anthology

Those are all science fiction… Interesting.

I think you need to explain this one to me on Skype. >.>

o.o Is this noir or cyberpunk?

I’ll let you in on a little secret - cyberpunk and noir go extremely well together

I personally call it Batman with a mech, but the whole tone of the series is filled with lost. The premise of everyone having forgotten their memories form 40 years ago? It’s pretty noir, not to mention the colour scheme is quite dark and faded.

They are! Blade runner specifically is held high as one the best examples of neo-noir in a cyberpunk world.

Just noticed that on the FurPlanet site, they have Mary Lowd listed as the editor. XD Looks like they fell into that same cut-and-paste trap that’s snared me a time or two when putting in new listings.

I also want this explanation. c.c

I don’t like to parrot other people but how on Earth is “Alien” in anyway related to Noir? I would presume because of the fact that it’s very claustrophobic and dark but I think that’s about as far as it goes.

I admit, that one is a bit of a stretch, though Noir tends to deal primarily with a cynical attitude with sexual motivations.

Alien was one of the first science fiction films to deal with ‘space truckers’ as it were, and their entire attitude fits alongside the standard Noir themed idea of a protagonist. (Down on their luck, in over their head, cynical attitude towards their superiors and current authority) The sexual themes are the Xenomorphs. The facehuggers are an amalgamation of both male and female sexual body parts. The chestbursters basically encompass reverse birth. The full grown Xenomorphs themselves have the inner mouth parts (again, penetration) as well as the fact that they were designed by Geiger, who’s art is highly sexualized in the first place. (look at some of his initial drawings of the aliens…)

Alien doesn’t fit within the Film Noir description, as it is a film style rather than the theme of the movies/novels, etc of the time. It does, however, fit within the Noir literary sense, though even I will admit it takes a bit of shoehorning.

Ah okay, that makes more sense Voice.

When you explain it like that it makes a bit more sense but yes it’s still a bit of a stretch.

It is a bit a stretch, but Alien has been described as a “sci-fi noir” or a “tech noir” in the past. The tension of fighting an enemy that you can’t truly beat along with the ending, are also part of the Noir trope, along with what Voice has said.

I’m posting it as an example to help people expand their minds and think outside the box about how noir can be applied.

Only sucky thing is for those of us who don’t usually write noir, tech, sci-fi, or apocalyptics anyhow X3 So no matter what we do it’s still stepping out of our comfort zone. Either way, still makes me glad Spirit will be taking the reins on this one xp

Sci-fi noir is just one type of a neo-noir. Classic and sci-fi are the two I enjoy the most because that’s what I like. Still, there’s supernatural noir out there you can read. I can find you lists of psychological noirs and I can see someone writing a fantasy noir. Don’t feel boxed in to just two groups. I’m trying to introduce and show people the tropes of noir so they can apply them to a story of their own.

Fantasy noir… that might actually tie in well then. I’ll see what Spirit’s thoughts are. Would definitely be curious to see what psychological noirs you have :3 Not so good at writing it, but love to read/watch them.

A lot of the original noirs were also classified as psychological thrillers. But for modern day movies: Fight Club and Momento have been referenced as Psycho Noirs.

Bwahahahaha love both X3 Though would Fight Club the book be more noir than Fight Club the movie, as far as the endings go?

I’m not usually a fan of ‘Top 10’ things because they’re all subjective, but this list of movies may help people get some more inspiration and ideas for neo-noir stories:

I’m planning on watching some of these myself in the next month.

Haven’t read the book so not sure?

The book is definitely more tragic than the movie, if’n you ask me. Some will say the book’s better, while others say the movie’s better.

Just a reminder there is roughly 7 weeks left until the due date. Submissions have started to trickle in.
Let me know if you have any questions or concerns as I know this is a big crunch time with four other anthologies accepting submissions in the fandom within a month.
