Furry Writers' Guild Forum

Hello Everyone!

This is going to be a bit complicated. I’m a writer that generally writes fantasy and science fiction, often using anthropomorphic characters. On occasion I write poetry. It has been known, but I never feel that I can call myself a poet. My composition process of pieces is erratic to say the least. Anyway, because I enjoy the challenge of writing about anthropomorphic characters I’ve got a loose association with the furry fandom, though ideas of coining a ‘furry’ literature do make me cringe slightly. But that’s just me.

I’ve been writing for five years now, going on to six, though I only believe the last year has produced anything I can be vaguely happy with. I’m also currently a 3rd year undergraduate studying English Literature at the University of Exeter (it may be relevant), so I’ve read a large range of canonical works alongside literary theory and criticism. As a result, I have a real love of archaisms, and I really do think that thee, thou, and generally all early modern speech is just more expressive than how we speak today. As a result, it creeps into my poetry and my fantasy writing.

Somewhat personally, I do struggle to hold any belief in my writing, though that is for personal reasons I shall not tire you with. Regardless, know that I really appreciate any interest shown in my work, and I do my best to support other writers. I like drinking whiskey, and I have a propensity for typos (I’ve gone over this post after some sleep, and I caught them). I apologise!

If you’re interested, here’s my FA profile http://www.furaffinity.net/user/televassi/, and here is a post on some of my works. http://www.anthroaquatic.com/forum/index.php?topic=510.0

Thanks for reading, I look forward to meeting you all!

Welcome to the forums!

Welcome! I’ll take a longer look at your poems later, but I liked what I saw on a first pass

Thanks Voice, nice to meet you!

Hey Huskyteer, thanks for the welcome! I remember seeing you back when I joined SoFurry, though I haven’t been active on that site for ages. Thanks for the quick look over those two poems, I look forward to hearing your opinions. =)

Greetings and welcome.

Hi and welcome!

'm a writer that generally writes fantasy and science fiction, often using anthropomorphic characters.

That’s pretty much how I prefer to identify myself as well, though obviously I have no issues with being considered a furry writer if people want to call me that, or I would never have run for president of this thing.

Thank you Dwale!

Thanks for the welcome Poetigress! Nice to hear I’m not alone on that matter. Honestly, my issue is more of a literary classification - anthropomorphism is more of a practice than a literary genre, thus it is absorbed by genres rather than being a literary movement of its own. The distinction of ‘furry’ is potentially only made by those in the fandom, whereas the wider reading public would place the work probably as fantasy or science fiction. That being said, it doesn’t mean it isn’t impossible, I’d just say it’s not the case at the moment.

Hello and welcome aboard!

Greets!

Thanks Kanren! I look forward to getting to know you and reading your work.

Hello, nice to meet you!

Everyone seems to be really friendly here. I wasn’t necessarily expecting that, considering some writing sites I’ve lurked around have been frankly dominated by a clique of members. Glad to see this isn’t the case. =)

Hello and welcome to the forums! If you ever get the opportunity, feel free to post a shout in the chat box. We always love meeting new faces there :3

For what it’s worth, there are a number of writers (myself included) who have little faith in their writing. It’s one of the lovely things about these forums- where we lack faith in ourselves, we can help give faith to others, and just maybe find the love in our own writing that it truly deserves. I do hope you find that here :3

Also, I do see where you’re coming from with the ‘genre’ of furry. Particularlly in recent years, it seems strange to consider it a genre in and of itself when anthros have been used in a number of different genres, ranging from fantasy and sci-fi to mystery to thriller to romance. I might still argue it’s a sub-genre, but that might only be because I avoided most anthro literature up until this year (far too many years rp’ing for me to take it very seriously >.<).

Nice to meet you Munchkin, thanks for the greeting! I’ll take a look at the shout box, though time zones may make it interesting!

Ah, the lack of faith seems to come with the words. And yes, I hope to make some friends here with whom we can mutually encourage each other!

Ah, awesome. I don’t mean it as a slight against furries writing literature, but my main reasoning is just so no one limits their field of writing to one style alone. I’d say the same about say, a horror writer who solely wrote werewolf fiction. Anyway, it certainly is a sub-genre! Let’s just not limit ourselves to submitting to only ‘furry’ publications. =)

XD Time zones always seem to make things interesting.

I think the main reason for the ‘furry’ publications, from what I’ve gathered of far more experienced authors than myself, is not only that the ‘furry’ aspect is more expected than rejected, but also because there’s far less competition in the market, making it far easier to get in. Add that to places like this allowing us to speak casually with the owners of a couple of those publications- which allows for a less anxiety-filled communication when it comes to talking business- and it just feels a lot less intimidating than the ‘big guys’. At least for those of us still getting used to the very idea of folks exchanging honest-to-goodness currency to read our words X3
