Furry Writers' Guild Forum

Greetings!

I just learned about FWG from a friend . I’ve written stories, poetry, and essays all my life as a hobby, but I’m really a computer programmer/IT systems architect by day. I’ve not had anything published – primarily because I’ve never tried. I’m ready for a career change, and in about seven years, a great opportunity for doing that will arrive at my doorstep. So, I figure now’s the time to start exploring whether I could turn a life-long hobby into a living.

For now, I am just seeking to improve my craft and discover what I’m capable of (or not), and learning the alchemy of transforming words into food on the table.

I look forward to learning from you all …

Welcome!

There are very few of us who support themselves by writing alone, but many of us make pennies here and there. Also, we’re nice

Greetings and welcome.

You forgot to mention “superlatively attractive.”

Hi and welcome! For me, the day job helps pay the bills and any income from writing is more or less just pocket money – but every little bit helps.

Nice, attractive people who work for pennies … awesome!

I think we all have stories about how little we’ve made off our writing, not to mention there are a lot of blog posts stating the same out there. It’s all good if you can, but there’s a reason most of us still have our day jobs. :stuck_out_tongue:

That said, welcome to the forums!

I have no delusions of wealth or grandeur … but in a few years I will be able to drop to working my day job to about half-time and still maintain my current standard of living. Such is the little benefit I’m discovering awaits from (a) middle-age and (b) settling for less and sticking with the same employer since day 1 of my career: I’ll be able to “retire” with my full pension before I’m really old. Or dead. Well, I guess I don’t have much to say about the dead part.

So, it’s a chance to try my hand at a new walk of life with very little risk.

That sounds like a wonderful opportunity to really start exploring that which you enjoy doing :3

Welcome to the forums, and feel free to chat in the Shoutbox sometime- we’d love to get to know you better!

Greetings from a middle-aged (auto worker) retiree!

Hello!

Quite a few people start writing once they retire for the reason that they do have the financial security to write more often, if not full time. So yes, go for it!

Welcome and hope your change is fun and fruitful!
