Hi everyone! I’m known as Dronon in the fandom - originally from Toronto, now living in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I’ve been lurking around in the fandom since the early 90s. So far I’ve only had one short story published, “Little Monster”, which appeared in Fred Patten’s Best in Show anthology way back in 2003, later reprinted in 2006 in the Furry! anthology.
In the past couple of years I’ve started to feel a bit restless, wanting to contribute more to the fandom within which I’ve largely been a passive consumer. I’ve done improv theater events at various furry cons, on and off - the Camp Feral improv show is a descendant of those, as is Alkali’s “Whose Lion is it Anyway?” which I co-started with SemJay, but I’m very low-profile socially, so I doubt anyone would remember me from those early shows.
Most of my effort in the past couple of years has gone into writing reviews. I don’t think I’m especially qualified, but the librarian in me likes to share! Originally I was an occasional contributor to Anthrozine, and currently I post to Flayrah. Generally I avoid reviewing mainstream content; I either review something from within the fandom, or something mildly obscure and well outside of it, because I think it’s interesting to look outside the fandom to see how other people play with the notion of anthropomorphism. I’m also able to follow most French comics and movies as long as the vocabulary’s not too weird.
Life’s been keeping me pretty busy lately, so now my reviewing has become less frequent too. I could trot out the usual parade of excuses for not writing more fiction - mostly it’s from being exceptionally lazy, and lacking ideas. Well, that’s not quite true. Ages ago I used to write some adult furry TF stuff under an alias (which very few people know is me); I was surprised to be approached by the first incarnation of Bad Dog Books about publishing it, but since there were only about 45K words putting it all together, they wanted more material and I didn’t follow through.
In the past couple of years I’ve been listening to a lot of furry podcasts; it’s great to hear younger people in the fandom getting into the spirit of things. I’ve also been working on a history of the fandom, and I’ve done panels at a couple of conventions on the subject, although I have yet to write up anything detailed and formal. Once my employment obligations eventually settle down, that’s the next big project I’d like to devote myself to, although I’m not sure what form it would take. I’ll want to bounce ideas and issues around with other people first. I don’t know if the Guild forums would be an appropriate venue for that kind of discussion.
Right now, I’m in the middle of trying to finish a long-overdue review for Fred Patten, as well as get ready for MFF 2014. I haven’t been there since 2008, egads. I don’t know what my schedule will be like, or whether I’ll be able to catch any of Mwalimu’s panels, but hey, if anyone wants to say hi or talk for a bit, drop me a PM beforehand and we can trade contact info! I offered to do a history panel and an extra improv event, but programming didn’t take me up on it.
