Furry Writers' Guild Forum

Greetings!

Hi everyone! I’m known as Dronon in the fandom - originally from Toronto, now living in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I’ve been lurking around in the fandom since the early 90s. So far I’ve only had one short story published, “Little Monster”, which appeared in Fred Patten’s Best in Show anthology way back in 2003, later reprinted in 2006 in the Furry! anthology.

In the past couple of years I’ve started to feel a bit restless, wanting to contribute more to the fandom within which I’ve largely been a passive consumer. I’ve done improv theater events at various furry cons, on and off - the Camp Feral improv show is a descendant of those, as is Alkali’s “Whose Lion is it Anyway?” which I co-started with SemJay, but I’m very low-profile socially, so I doubt anyone would remember me from those early shows.

Most of my effort in the past couple of years has gone into writing reviews. I don’t think I’m especially qualified, but the librarian in me likes to share! Originally I was an occasional contributor to Anthrozine, and currently I post to Flayrah. Generally I avoid reviewing mainstream content; I either review something from within the fandom, or something mildly obscure and well outside of it, because I think it’s interesting to look outside the fandom to see how other people play with the notion of anthropomorphism. I’m also able to follow most French comics and movies as long as the vocabulary’s not too weird.

Life’s been keeping me pretty busy lately, so now my reviewing has become less frequent too. I could trot out the usual parade of excuses for not writing more fiction - mostly it’s from being exceptionally lazy, and lacking ideas. Well, that’s not quite true. Ages ago I used to write some adult furry TF stuff under an alias (which very few people know is me); I was surprised to be approached by the first incarnation of Bad Dog Books about publishing it, but since there were only about 45K words putting it all together, they wanted more material and I didn’t follow through.

In the past couple of years I’ve been listening to a lot of furry podcasts; it’s great to hear younger people in the fandom getting into the spirit of things. I’ve also been working on a history of the fandom, and I’ve done panels at a couple of conventions on the subject, although I have yet to write up anything detailed and formal. Once my employment obligations eventually settle down, that’s the next big project I’d like to devote myself to, although I’m not sure what form it would take. I’ll want to bounce ideas and issues around with other people first. I don’t know if the Guild forums would be an appropriate venue for that kind of discussion.

Right now, I’m in the middle of trying to finish a long-overdue review for Fred Patten, as well as get ready for MFF 2014. I haven’t been there since 2008, egads. I don’t know what my schedule will be like, or whether I’ll be able to catch any of Mwalimu’s panels, but hey, if anyone wants to say hi or talk for a bit, drop me a PM beforehand and we can trade contact info! I offered to do a history panel and an extra improv event, but programming didn’t take me up on it.

Hiya!

Well, it’s nice to see someone who’s been the community for a while. I understand the feeling of being restless and wanting to contribute more to a community since that’s what brought me back to the community.

I’m not sure if this is the best place to discuss it but it most certainly isn’t the worst either. I would like to know about it, at the very least.

Anyways welcome to the forums! Hope you enjoy your time here!

Welcome! I find just being around here helps get the creative juices flowing

Welcome to the forums Dronon! I hold a lot of respect for those who have been in the fandom before the internet allowed folks to network and hide behind computer screens. I hope this site helps you find the motivation and creative juice flow you’re looking for. Feel free to post a thread about your idea. There are quite a few of us that like to put in our own two cents’ worth about such things. Also, feel free to leave a shout out in the Shout Box. The conversations aren’t restrained to just the Coffee Chats, and can range anything from the absolute absurd to the far too serious.

Greetings and welcome. I hope you will have a productive and enjoyable time here.

Welcome to the forums!
Glad to see another reviewer out there. If you haven’t already, consider joining Goodreads and posting your reviews there. It’s a place where fandom stories/novels could really benefit from more reviewers posting. It’s also a good place to start doing mainstream reviews as well.

Greets!

Glad to see you here. I remember attending one of your panels on the history of the furry fandom a couple of years ago and learned a lot of things I hadn’t been aware of about the early days of the fandom. Did you mention at one point that you’re compiling a written version of the history of the fandom? I can only think of two others who have done anything of the sort - Fred Patten and Perri Prinz.

(That brings up the thought that most of our discussions here on FWG have to do with writing fiction, whereas there’s the whole other world of writing non-fiction that doesn’t get anywhere near as much discussion. Should there be more? But I digress…)

If you make it to any of my MFF panels I’ll be glad to have you there to participate. It’s nice to know there will be FWG members in the audience cheering for me.

On that note, the artist I’m hoping to work with for the cover art to my antho suggested that I do a furrified version of real life love stories within the fandom X3

Welcome, a bit belatedly. And consider sending reviews to Claw & Quill on occasion. I can send you a login if you’re interested – message me contact information.

Hello and happy late welcomes!
