Furry Writers' Guild Forum

Direct from Zyearth. . . It's R. A. Meenan!

Hello forums! My name’s R.A. Meenan (You can call me Rachel) and I’m brand new to the forums. I honestly can’t remember the last time I was active in a forum. . . Probably in the old SSMB forums when I was in my Sonic the Hedgehog/Pixel art stage. XD

Ironically, I met my husband online on a Sonic the Hedgehog forum called the Netraptor forums. We’ve been together ten years now. =D

As for who I am, as you can imagine, I’m writer. My novels originally started out as heavily fan character driven plots in the Sonic the Hedgehog universe, but as the years went on and I moved away from Sonic, I started turning the character into original characters and rewriting the novels to get rid of the Sonic elements.

I’m putting my first novel through a professional editor now. I should have that first book out early next year. (Hype!)

One of the things that makes my series unique is the unique species I created for it. They’re called quilar. Here’s an example of one, using one of my main characters, Matt Azure.

You’ll have to forgive the art. I’m not the best artist in the world. >>

When I’m not writing, I’m teaching. I’m a University professor of English, so if you ever need help with grammar, spelling, or format, I’m the girl to talk to.

Though… I guess I’m not really a “girl.” More like a “woman.” I turn 30 in just a few weeks (December 28th, yikes!)

In my spare time I like to draw (Photoshop FTW) and play video games. I’m a huge fan of Assassin’s Creed, Dust: An Elysian Tail, Halo, Pokemon, and many others.

As you can imagine, I also read a lot. I’m really into The Song of the Summer King right now. XD

I also own four cats. Two of them needed bottle feeding and are only about 5 months old. =D

So… That’s me! Hi everyone! =D

Greetings and welcome. I hope you will have a pleasant and rewarding time here. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

You finally joined us did you?
MWAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH!!!

Welcome! You are among friends! (And your cats sound adorable.)

Greets! And nice art-- I hope you sell gazillions.

Welcome, and we look forward to seeing you succeed.

Thanks for all the welcomes, guys. =D

Out of curiosity, what kind of projects are you guys all working on? Or reading for that matter.

Welcome! Welcome!

Best of luck to you on your writing endavours. May your sales be plentiful and your material, excellent.

Good luck with your book. Voice seems to know you from somewhere.

Once you have it professionally edited, are you self-pubbing or are you going through a publisher?

Oh gosh. My big project is a (non-furry) web serial I’m developing, titled “From Winter’s Ashes”, intended to put out 2 entries a week at about 7k words an entry. Fantasy noire about a church detective whose husband and son were murdered by the necromancers that it’s her job to hunt, and her struggling in the ruins of her life and striking back against those who took her family from her.

Also presently grinding through a few short stories for some furry anthologies. At least two stories for the Claw Your Way To Victory sports anthology. Awaiting word on whether or not I’ve made it into the latest Hot Dish.

Hi and welcome!

As for projects, I’ve just finished putting together an ebook of my holiday-themed stories called Wishing Season–that’s been my focus for about the last month or so. It’s up on Smashwords now and waiting for Premium approval, but I’m planning to get it available on Amazon too before I make an ‘official’ announcement with all the links.

Really into The Song of the Summer King right now, you say? I’ve heard of that before. Sounds familiar, at least XP

Glad to have you here, and hope you find what you’re looking for and more

We met on twitter from several mutual friends. XD

I was originally intending to try and traditionally publish, but after YEARS of research on both self publishing and trad publishing, I decided that self publishing is a better fit for me and my novels. And hey, if my books can be just as professional looking when self publishing, isn’t that all that matters? XD

That story sounds… completely awesome actually. o_o Are you putting it out yet? Do you have a link?

That is so awesome! I’ll have to keep an eye out for it when it comes out. Your avatar picture is completely adorable by the way.

Song of the Summer King was written by Jess E. Owen, another guild member. It was one of her fans that got me here in the first place. XD It’s a fun but dramatic story about gryfons and wolves. Very cool. She’s doing a kickstarter to get her third book out right now actually!

Thanks for the wonderful warm welcome, everyone!

Hello and welcome! It sounds like you have some pretty amazing things lined up  That’s great! Also an early welcome to the 30 club X3 I’ll be sure to make room for you.

Token Munchkin cat here. Personally, I’m chipping away at two possible stories for Will of the Alpha (though I may only finish one >.<), as well as cleaning up my story for RainFurrest’s Sword’s and Sorcery, a non-profit anthology. I have a few other stories for a few other anthologies still in the scheming stage (thankfully those aren’t due until next year X3). Next year I’ll also be putting together my first anthology, though it’s closed submissions to allow me more control over the whole process >.>

As for books, I’m (finally!) delving more into furry literature with Out of Position by Kyell Gold. I hope to revisit Patrick Rothfuss’ Kingkiller Chronicles soon, as well as the Hobbit since it seems (judging from the movies) I missed quite a bit when I read it back in middle school x.x

I’m also a part time movie-holic X3 There isn’t a genre I’ve seen that I don’t have at least one favorite movie in. So if you ever want to talk movies, I’m your cat!

I work security, ten hours a day at an admin building, so you can usually find me in the Shoutbox Tuesday through Friday. Please, don’t be shy to drop an occasional Hi in there; we would love to have you!

Anywho, welcome welcome!

Dang, you are one busy writer cat! That’s awesome that you have so many projects going. =D

As weird as this may sound, I’m actually not really into movies. o_o I’m super picky about what I watch in both movies and TV shows, so I’m kind of limited there. I tend to watch movies based off books and I really only follow three TV shows, all British…

I am strange. XD

I’m trying to be, but I might wind up having to drop submitting to a couple of anthologies x.x It’s my first year really digging into them (though I’ve been writing for years), so I wanted to test my own limits on what I could handle and motivate myself for.

Honestly as much as I enjoy movies, I’m not much of a tv buff >.> I prefer Netflix, where I can pick and choose what I want to watch and when I watch it. Even then, the cue is limited to mostly movies and anime X3

You have me curious though, what’s your favorite book to movie transition? Least favorite? My own favorite would have to be The Great Gatsby. It had all the key elements that made the book so amazing (for me at least >.>) while still expanding on the world it takes place in and the characters who live in it in a direction that felt like it stayed so true to the original feel. It didn’t feel like it got the Hollywood treatment, and managed to retain the original message of the book (unlike LotR, which completely cuts off the ending and causes it to completely lose the biggest moral of the story (according to a number of fans of the book)). It helps that Leo played the perfect Gatsby, but then he’s always been great at those roles X3 I felt To Kill a Mockingbird took a very close second though. The courtroom scene alone was pretty amazing.

checks another off his list excellent …

I guess it’s about time I started gently touting the link. https://fromwintersashes.wordpress.com/

Whoops, I was trying to be silly but I think I failed. I know her well and it’s always a delight to have her around. Song of the Summer King is also on my to-read list XD I have a feeling I’ll be thinking the same of you pretty quickly
