Furry Writers' Guild Forum

Calls for submissions

Thank you for doing it that way. One of my pet peeves is that more furry publishers don’t bother to create separate imprints for their adult vs general works and just throw everything under the same name and website (though I can understand how it’s way too late for most of them to change now).

I’ll get this added to the Paying Markets page later tonight.

Weasel, I noticed that the guidelines on the Red Ferret website mention a deadline of October 1, 2015 and pay of $20, where you said December 1 and 1/2 cent per word here. I’ve put what you posted here on the paying markets page, assuming it was more up to date, but I just wanted to double-check. Let me know if anything needs changing.

Everything on the FWG Site is good  I updated the Red Ferret Page to reflect the current pay and deadline. Thanks for adding the listing!

There’s a call for submissions on the following page for Epona’s Children, a collection about mystical equines:

Deadline August 1st; only pays royalties; 500-7000 words; PG-13 rating at most. More details at the link.

Heat now open for submissions, until August 31:

My publisher, Inspired Quill, has open (and unsolicited) submissions for full novels right now. Details and the submission form are here: http://www.inspired-quill.com/submissions/ Deadline is August 31st, submission is free.

This is something that might be of interest to all of us. And it’s a paying market, too!

Myriad Lands

An Anthology of Non-Western Fantasy

Beyond the familiar tropes of knights and dragons, there is a whole world of possibilities for fantasy literature.

This collection seeks to explore the stories available in non-traditional fantasy.

We are looking for secondary world fantasy, where the world building and story telling is based on sources other than medieval Europe.

These can be based on other Earth cultures, examples such as Barry Hughart’s fantasy China in Bridge of Birds, or Aliette de Bodard’s magical Aztec Empire in Servant of the Underworld. Alternately, they could have a totally original setting, such as M.A.R. Barker’s Tekumel, N.K. Jemisin’s Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, or China Mieville’s Bas-Lag.

I DO WANT:

Engaging stories with interesting characters.
Unique stories that flow from the modes of life in their subject cultures.
Social structures and Governments other than medieval European feudalism/monarchy, cultural traditions other than European.
Vivid descriptions of lands, peoples, customs (but avoid infodumps or travelogues where possible).
I DO NOT WANT:

Stereotypes or clichéd portrayal of cultures.
Stories based purely on showing the strangeness or exoticism of a culture.
Standard sword-and-sorcery plots with foreign sounding names.
Explicit and excessive depictions of violence, torture, or rape. (A fight scene is fine, a full page describing the blood and entrails pouring from a wound is excessive.)
Modern day or urban-fantasy.
LENGTH: 1000-6000 words. We will consider a select few longer works, but query first.

RIGHTS SOUGHT: First Worldwide print and electronic English Language rights. Exclusivity for 1 year from date of release. Non-exclusive rights to keep the anthology in print afterwards.

PAYMENT: £0.03/word (approx. 5¢/word US). Contributor’s copy. Payment will be made when story line-up is finalized.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: October 1st

WERE- is an anthology looking for were-creatures other than wolves (the more unusual the creature, the better). Max of 7,500 words, no reprints, deadline October 31.

Fairy Tales in the 50s, Diesel Punk style. So, Furries should fit into that with a little wiggle room to spare.

A monthly contest (with entry fee) whose theme this month is Talking Animals. Word count of 150 max, due to their small format. Deadline September 26th:

https://writingmaps.submittable.com/submit/44973

Apex is doing their flash fiction contest again, this time with a theme of “Christmas invasions.”

That’s right. This year our flash fiction contest is all about Christmas invasions. Whether your invaders are robots, aliens, or sentient Christmas ornaments is completely up to you, but if you want to win, you must write us a story no longer than 250 words that deals with an invasion and Christmas.

Less than 250 words, sf/f/h. Three winners will receive $.06/word, publication in Apex, and 3 Apex books of their choice. Everyone who enters gets a free (electronic) issue of Apex. You can send up to 3 entries as long as each one is sent in a separate email. Deadline November 16.

All the details:

Also – I know there are people here who write erotica and people here who write horror, but for those who might be into combining them, here’s an erotic horror anthology:

While not furry, I see a lot of writers who like: YA, romance, horror, LGBTQIA characters.
So Book Smugglers is putting out an anthology next year with the theme superheros and they’d like to see one or more of those elements in a superhero story. You can have a furry superhero I’m sure too.

I have been know to force a furry or two into spandex…

Wolfsinger Pub is a small (very small!) press but looks to be prolific in putting out anthologies, and she seems very open to different writers. This theme caught my eye, but there are a number of anthologies opening for submissions in January. Token payment, but for writers looking to build a resume, it could be fun!

Unintended Consequences
- editor Carol Hightshoe
It seems like in today’s world that anytime a new something or other comes out – a few years down the road there are
lawyers advertising to get clients because of something that happened regarding that drug, product etc. In some cases
there is evidence that the manufacturer new about the issues and opted to ignore. In some cases, it is something that is
finally confirmed decades down the road and wasn’t even foreseeable.

What we’re looking for are speculative fiction stories involving the creation, manufacture, release etc. of some new
technology (or magic) that is supposed to do one thing and later on down the road some unintended consequence is
discovered. It can be product that is supposed to be ‘good’ but has a bad consequence or just has something different
happen as well. Conversely, you can have something that is supposed to be dangerous or ‘evil’ and have it develop a
‘good’ consequence.

An example of unintended consequences from the novel Dispassionate Lies by Eileen Schuh. Decades after the
introduction of Birth Control Pills – there is a generation of women who are born asexual—no sex drive or interest in sex.
(This would be an unintended consequence of something that supposed to help women take control of their reproduction)

Give us the whole story regarding the original intended purpose as well as the good, the bad and the unintended
consequences thereof.

Break the story-writing rules if you want. If you use a tried and true plotline, twist it in an original and interesting way.
Original stories are preferred. Query for reprints.

ALL writers are encouraged to submit. Doesn’t matter if you’re a pro with years of credits, a beginner just starting out, or
a teenager - please feel free to send the editor a story. In your cover email, please tell the editor a bit about yourself and a
quick one-line synopsis of the story. Include genre. If experimental, please explain the type or how so the editor doesn’t
edit out the form or reject it out of hand. Thank you.

Dragons anthology from World Weaver Press coming…next year…probably?

http://www.worldweaverpress.com/submit-anthologies.html (scroll down)

That anthology’s been listed for… definitely a year now, maybe as long as two. I’ll believe it when they open for submissions.

(Edited to add: Yeah, first mention of it in this thread, anyway, was back in March 2014. Hopefully they’ll get to it soon…)

Paying markets page now updated with the new FurPlanet anthologies (science fiction horror and FANG 7):

Horray!!!

Oops, sorry! I remembered the corvids, but not the dragons.
