Are you submitting to any markets outside the fandom?

So, I’m about to submit my first story to a non-Fandom market. The story has nothing to do with anthropomoprhics.

I’m wondering, are any of you guys submitting outside the fandom too? Doesn’t have to apply to anthro stories, but just in general.

While Voice certainly has been published out there in the great blue yonder, I don’t know of anyone else submitting, much less getting accepted.

Good luck on your submission! And, if it gets rejected, just turn it around and send it to the next market. I’ve had stories collect more than forty rejections before being published. I’m up to about 780 rejections total – most of them from outside the fandom. I submit to markets outside the fandom regularly, and most of my short story publications are outside the fandom. There’s a complete list of my publications on my website (http://marylowd.com/bibliography.html), but the highlights include Daily Science Fiction, Redstone Science Fiction, Cosmos Online, and Jim Baen’s Universe.

I also know that Poetigress has been published in Strange Horizons and Daily Science Fiction. Tim Susman has been published in Apex. And Phil Geusz publishes a lot of his stuff outside the fandom.

Yes - writing and submitting children’s books, and getting them rejected! I also submit fiction to women’s magazines. But my only extra-fandom success so far has been erotic sci-fi…

I’ve never bothered to tally numbers of rejections or acceptances, myself, but I also regularly submit and publish outside the fandom. When I first found out about the furry fandom around 2000 or so, I’d already had some stories published, so it was no big deal to me to keep sending stuff to regular markets while I was also sending stories to furry ones.

I’d say 2013 was about even in terms of sending to furry and non-furry markets, but previous years were skewed much more toward places outside the fandom. What I’m most proud of is that, in some cases, the fiction I’ve had accepted is the same sort I might have otherwise posted to FA, as anthro in some way. (That’s especially true of a novella I have coming out in a sf/f anthology in the next couple months.) But I’ve also had non-anthro pieces published outside the fandom as well.

I’ve had more things published outside the fandom.

Most of my publications are outside the fandom.

To echo what others have said, most of my publications are outside the fandom as well. Then again, I only have two furry short stories published.

Of those two, one was in a furry publication (Renard’s Menagerie, sadly no longer with us) and the other was in a general sci-fi eZine – though that story had Cordwainer Smith-esque underpeople in it more than the traditional furry…

My opinion has always been to try to write the best story that you can – the story of story that you want to read – and then try to find the best home for it you can.

On the subject matter, does anyone know of a good website, or a good list of non-anthro Fantasy/Scifi Publication that is free where one can go to, to find a list of anthologies and publication that are accepting stories?

Warnndog.

You can also run a search with The Submission Grinder. (And there’s Duotrope, which works the same way, though that’s a pay site now.)

I’m always on the lookout for new science-fiction and fantasy, so if you have anything finished feel free to send it my way.
