25 essential furry books

I have a new project: to make a list of 25 essential furry book titles.

What about the top 50 titles?

Almost everyone can agree on 5 or 10 titles, but after that it spreads out. This is basically a list of personal choices, so every list will be slightly different. What are the titles that will appear on most lists?

This includes titles from general literature, not just books produced within furry fandom. Which 25 books would you recommend as essential titles to someone wanting to read the most important furry lit, or to collect a library of 25 basic furry books?

Here is a sample list, arranged chronologically. It includes mostly fiction, mostly adult books but some juveniles or Young Adults. What is on your list?

1 Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. 1865.
2 The Jungle Book. 1894.
3 The Island of Dr. Moreau. 1896.
4 The Wind in the Willows. 1908.
5 archy and mehitabel. 1927.
6 Animal Farm. 1945.
7 The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. 1950.
8 Charlotte’s Web. 1952.
9 Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. 1971.
10 Watership Down. 1972.
11 Tailchaser’s Song. 1985.
12 Redwall. 1986.
13 Felidae. 1993.
14 The Blood Jaguar. 1998.
15 A Whisper of Wings. 1999.
16 Best in Show. 2003.
17 Volle. 2005.
18 ROAR volume 1. 2007.
19 Waterways. 2008.
20 Otters in Space. 2010.
21 Green Fairy. 2012.
22 God of Clay. 2013.
23 The Book of Lapism. 2015.
24 Huntress. 2015.
25 Furries Among Us. 2015.

I have listed just Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, though I am aware that you can get both Alice and Through the Looking Glass printed together. Similarly, there are editions of both The Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book, of all three archy collections, and of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe alone and of the complete Chronicles of Narnia.

There are many furry anthologies. Is ROAR volume 1 the best? Should novels like God of Clay be included that are only the first volumes of series and have cliffhanger endings?

Spontaneously only three books come to mind:

Mr. and Mrs. Bunny: Detectives Extraordinaire!
Lord and Lady Bunny: Almost Royalty!
Fog Mound book series

I’m familiar with the Fog Mound trilogy, which are very enjoyable but I’d hardly call them essential.

Thanks for the recommendation of Mr. and Mrs. Bunny – Detectives Extraordinaire and Lord and Lady Bunny – Almost Royalty by Polly Horvath. I’ve just reserved them at the Los Angeles Public Library.
